Joy is not a word I think about a lot. But recently I have discovered the joy of simple things that fill my heart with joy and make me aware of God’s presence, love, and glory.
Two such examples are the interactions I have with my young granddaughters.
Conversations with my 4-month-old granddaughter, when I look into her face and talk with her, is one of those interactions. She stares at me, seemingly totally engaged and when she breaks out in a big smile or she starts talking in her beautiful little voice with words that are indistinguishable, my heart is filled with love and joy.
Walks with my 2-year-old granddaughter, when she reaches up with her little hand and grabs a hold of my pinky, is another of those interactions. Sometimes she simply says my name or asks me to take her to the toy room to play; both are such simple things but are filled with the amazing glory of being fully present with someone you love.
These are two very simple interactions that overwhelm me with joy and happiness and make me aware of God’s amazing goodness.
I often have trouble engaging with God on a personal basis. He feels distant and unavailable. But, in the magical moments I enjoy with my granddaughters, I can’t help but think that God is speaking and saying that all He wants from me is my attention, my trust, and my love.
I am not expecting my granddaughters to do anything for me. I simply relish being with them and interacting with them and caring for them. I believe God desires the same with me.
It makes me realize that if these relationships bring so much joy to me that God must enjoy when I intentionally look to Him with love and affection and ask Him to be a part of my life. Likewise, I believe He is deeply pleased when I grab ahold of His hand through faith and when I trust Him to be with me and guide me throughout the simple and chaotic moments of each day.
He wants me to know He is always present, regardless of what I am facing or how I am feeling. He simply wants me to look into His face with love and adoration, engage with Him in simple conversation about the moments in my life, and reach for His hand and walk with Him in simple faith, enjoying His presence and love. He is always present with me.
I think God must be like a grandpa. He simply loves me because I am His.
He is always looking into your face and extending His hand of love, because He enjoys just being with YOU.
I hope you experience His love, joy, and presence today.
“For I am the LORD your God who takes hold of your right hand and says to you, do not fear; I will help you.”
“God did this so that they would seek him and perhaps reach out for him and find him, though he is not far from any one of us. ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’ As some of your own poets have said, ‘We are his offspring.’”
